Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the ChessMate Camp FAQ page! Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions parents ask about our programs, schedule, and registration process.
What is ChessMate Camp?
ChessMate Camp is a 10-week, in-person chess program designed for children in grades K–6. Our goal is to help students develop focus, creativity, and confidence through structured lessons, interactive play, and friendly competitions.
Where is ChessMate Camp located?
ChessMate Camp is held at The Ivy Leaf Education Center, located at 16469 Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92128. All classes take place on-site, allowing students to engage in hands-on lessons, group activities, and over-the-board play in a safe and welcoming setting.
What age or skill levels can join?
We primarily welcome students in grades K–6, but this is not a strict requirement. Players in 7th or 8th grade who are passionate about chess or meet the skill level for our Advanced Course (1200+ ELO) are also encouraged to register. Our goal is to group students by skill level rather than age, ensuring every player learns at a comfortable and challenging pace. We currently offer three levels:
-
Beginner (0-400 ELO): For students new to chess or learning the basics, no experience required.
-
Intermediate (400-1200 ELO): For players who know how to play full games and want to improve tactics and strategy.
-
Advanced (1200+): For experienced students ready to refine competitive and tournament skills.
How are classes structured?
Each class meets once a week on Sundays for 1.5 hours. Lessons include guided instruction, interactive puzzles, team challenges, and hands-on play. The final week ends with a class tournament with prizes.
How much does the program cost?
Beginner Course: $250 total
Intermediate Course: $350 total
Advanced Course: $350 total
All materials are provided. Payment is due at registration to secure your child’s spot.
How many students are in each class?
We keep group sizes up to 20 students per class so that every student can receive personal attention.
Who teaches the classes?
All sessions are led by experienced chess instructors with years of tournament and teaching experience. The program is directed by Byron Lu, founder of ChessMate Camp, who has extensive competitive and coaching background in scholastic chess.
What should my child bring to class?
Just a water bottle and a curious mind! All chess boards, pieces, and teaching materials are provided. Light snacks are optional.
What happens if my child misses a class?
If a student misses a session, they can review lesson notes and optional practice exercises emailed to parents after each class. Unfortunately, we can’t offer make-up sessions or refunds for missed days.
Can parents watch the classes?
Parents are welcome to observe the first 5–10 minutes of class or join for the end-of-session tournament. We kindly ask that parents allow students to focus during instruction time.
How do I register?
You can register directly through our website’s Register page. Once your payment and form are submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation email within 24 hours.
What is the refund policy?
Full refunds are available up to 10 days before the session begins. Cancellations made within 10 days are eligible for a 50% refund. No refunds are given after the program begins except in medical emergencies.

Currently, all classes are in-person group sessions only. We may offer private or online lessons in the future.
